Adults Jiu-Jitsu
The Games Method
Traditional martial arts teach specific techniques through a step-by-step process. Afterward, the students drill the step-by-step techniques on a passive partner who gives little to new resistance. A new way of learning is sweeping through the Jiu-Jitsu community. Through the playing of games, Jiu-Jitsu is taught through foundational function tasks of positions and techniques. Ascend is moving away from prescribing specific movements and using games to teach the sport.
Instructional Format
Ascend offers classes taught in group settings, building a sense of community and shared progress. With class sizes ranging from 6 to 20 students, the 90-minute-long sessions provide a 50/50 balance of games and drilling techniques. The program's co-ed format offers instruction tailored for kids, youth, and adults, with or without previous athletic experience. We begin with a few warmup drills. We play a standup game to work on takedowns. We play two fundamental games for guard passing. We drill techniques for the position of the week. We then play some games within the position of the week. We close with another takedown game and have sparring right after class.
